A few observations for me to look back on in 2012, assuming I make it to then.
The Opening Ceremony was spectacular, I've not seen one better and I was really annoyed with the BBC because I didn't record it so when they said they
were showing the highlights I thought "great". But they didn't show the highlights at all - in fact they missed most of it and concentrated on
the entry of the athletes - it wasn't what I wanted to see. I feel very angry that they didn't give everyone a chance who missed it to see the full
event. Big black mark for them. How we are going to begin to compete with that for an Opening Ceremony I really don't know - I can't see a thousand
Morris Dancers turning people on.
The other more worrying aspect of it is the lack of bums on seats. So much so that China are grabbing people off the streets of Beijing to try and make it look
as though the audience is huge - and they are failing. We were told we will make a mint of money by holding the Olympics - but if people can't afford to
come or buy tickets then where is this alleged windfall coming from? If someone could tell me of one City which has made a fortune out of holding the Games I
will be very grateful to them. China spent 40 BILLION dollars and we certainly don't have that sort of money in the kitty and as I write I read somewhere
that the costs of building our new Olympic Stadium is spiralling.
Finally, why are sports dominated by professionals included in the Olympics? Footballers and Tennis Players get enough cash (and recognition, not to mention
Cups) and they should NOT be included in the Games. I think it's all getting out of hand and soon the Games will fold because nobody will be able to afford
them.
